Ed and Susie Underwood established Underwood's Nursery in 1952 as a part-time business. While Ed was working at Tecumseh Products full-time, Susie handled the part- time business during the day.

They started out growing strawberry plants and some nursery stock on a small, two-acre area. As the business increased from growing plants they expanded into landscape maintenance and mowing lawns. When Ed took a leave from Tecumseh Products in 1972, he was immersed in the business full-time from then on. Over the next 30 years the business grew and expanded into many areas of the outdoor care business. Snow plowing, Christmas tree sales, Case Garden Equipment dealership, and landscape construction. The Underwood's have two sons in the business. Mark Underwood manages the lawn and tree care business, and E.J. Underwood manages the landscape design and construction division. Underwood's Nursery is now 51 years old and still going strong.
